Zubat/Bat Costume Tutorial (Fixed)

Description

A quick attempt at a rundown of how I am made my Zubat. This is mainly for my fellow swarmmates but I suppose anyone who wanted could use this. It just takes a hoodie, an umbrella, scissors, needle and thread, hot glue, (optional) needle nose pliers and (if desired) paint. I know not all umbrellas are assembled the same, but the one I used is like this.

1. Disassemble the umbrella. (You twist off the top and then undo some wires and stuff. You should be able to do this fairly easily if you examine the mechanism closely. I found that needle nose pliers helped untwist the wire.) Save the wires for step 6!

2. Cut the umbrella up. So you will need to cut a left and a right wing and I tried to demonstrate which sides of the ribs you will cut. You will end up removing one rib from each wing and then the two excess ribs off the ear bits.

2.5. You will need to break the ribs a little to make a nice spine for the ears. I ended up having to pull one end out of metal and bending and snapping one joint. I did my best to illustrate this. It didn't take much force but be careful not to bend the metal. You just want a nice triangle with one joint.

3. Cut the ear cloth. I put the ear spines about how big I wanted them and then I left maybe a half inch excess on the two sides so I could fold it over and encase the spines. Do this in the center of the piece so that you have the edge pieces free for step 7.

4. Glue the ears. So place your spines on it and hot glue the edges over it to create a nice ear shape. :D (Big Grin)

5. This step is optional. For us, to do Zubat, it has a purple inner ear and wing so paint. Paint a few coats. I'd finish it with a sealer. Using acrylics, you end up with a very matte color and it gives it a faint shine. :D (Big Grin) (Note: I initially did a few coats of fabric paint which not only was as super pain to apply but I discovered that when I folded the wings, the paint stuck to itself like no one's business so I added an acrylic coat over it. Acrylics just go on a lot easier. I would suggest that at this point. I'm not sure if they will flake one day or not.)

6. Assemble the wings! I'm sorry this picture isn't very good. Basically, you'll want to line up the two spines of your wings so they create a joint. You'll then insert the wires I hope you saved from the first step through the holes to create a loop that allows them to bend but stay together.

7. Cover the wing spines! Take the excess from the ears and cut narrow strips from the edges. This should be just long enough to cover the length of the spines. If it isn't, cut a couple pieces and glue them together. Hot glue them on top of the spines. Be careful not to make the top joint immobile.

8. Sew your bits to the hoodie! The ears I haven't figured out how to make stand straight up, but I think they're cute as they are so I left mine.

Good luck. >:D (Big Grin)
